Gilon d’Aquitaine, Bretonnian duke and ageing Grail Knight in his 70s, rode as fast as he could atop his winged steed, Fulminer. The knight had only just returned from a skirmish, fighting off undead forces led by the dreaded Red Duke, the Scourge of Aquitaine, when he discovered that the Prophetess of the Lady, Iselda d’Aquitaine, had been abducted by a group of peasants and brigands known as Herrimaults which translates as ‘Faceless men’.
Led by a man who used the signifier “Carlomax” to hide his identity from the nobles in case they sought retaliation against his family, these herrimaults had two simple goals, to fight for justice by standing up for their oppressed comrades and more broadly, to arouse enough support among the masses to organise a peasant rebellion large enough to free them from the shackles of feudalism.
After investigating the scene of her kidnapping, it appeared to Gilon that Iselda had been travelling by carriage on her way to a banquet in Brionne when the Herrimaults emerged from their trees, lured her accompaniment of knights into a ditch where they then fired arrow after arrow into the pit until the both the knights and their horses were dead and then abducted her from her carriage, all before she could attempt to defend herself with magic.
Following her abduction, the Herrimaults had been seen dragging her into the Forest of Châlons, a wise place to take her as any organised assault force would be spotted and intercepted by the nearby Greenskins stronghold known as Massif Orcal atop the forest’s neighbouring sheer cliffs. However, while an army or a detachment of knights would surely be spotted, a lone grail knight riding his Pegasus could surely pass over the forest, unencumbered.
And so, after flying across the forest Gilon finally decided to land when he came across a lone tower hidden within the treeline, somewhere he instantly realised must be where the herrimaults are hiding the damsel from him since the tower was clearly designed to be too thin for a steed to enter. Gilon dismounted from Fulminer, tying its reins to a nearby tree stump and entered the tower where, after ascending its stairs for 20 minutes, Gilon finally found the herrimaults. As he entered the room, Carlomax and 8 of his peasant comrades drew raised their bows to draw them should he attack while two more picked up spears and one held a knife to Lady Iselda’s throat at the back of the room, both as a threat to Duke Gilon and as a way of stopping her from drawing on her magic. As Gilon entered the room, Carlomax began to speak.
“We want to make zis clear, monsieur. We do not vant to hurt this lady, but we will do zis if you refuse to take us seriously. For too long, your family has oppressed my people, relying on farcical aquatic ceremonies to decide who rules and who lives in ze mud. Well, no longer. If you want us not to kill zis woman, you must pledge on your knight’s vows to release ze village of Derrevin from your control. Our people vill be free, eizer by your word or by your head.”….
- Laugh React: Gilon decides to be diplomatic and agrees to relinquish authority over the village of Derrevin, making Derrevin Libre the first ever free peasant-state in Bretonnia, in return for Iselda’s unharmed return. After all, who’s to say these stupid peasants won’t come back begging to him when winter strikes or greenskins attack? Not to mention the fact he could just take the village back by force after granting the peasants their freedom.
….
- Love React: There was no way Gilon would consider negotiating with filthy peasants. Consequently, Gilon stepped forward to kill Carlomax and his comrades only to step over a makeshift trip wire that dropped a net from the ceiling on him. Gilon desperately attempted to free himself from the net but to no avail as one of the spearmen came over and hit the back of Gilon’s head with the shaft of his spear, slightly dislodging the immense helmet so that Carlomax’s archers could target their arrows at the newly exposed area above his neck which was only protected by the thinnest of chain mail since he never expected to have his helmet knocked off it. Carlomax had failed to free his village but at least everyone would now know how serious he and his comrades are after killing a duke of Bretonnia. The brigands packed up, keeping their hostage Iselda in tow as they returned to their village. If any knights sought retaliation, they could threaten to kill the damsel once more.
….
- Sad React: Gilon was in no mood to negotiate and so proceeded into combat, sidestepping a conveniently placed rope connected to a net and blocking arrow after arrow with his shield as he made his way into melee, killing the two spear men with ease when they attempted to fight him while the archers backed away as far as they could in the room. Still, Gilon approached them and with all the haste of the lady, began to kill archer after archer, causing Carlomax and two of his comrades to escape by abseiling from the tower’s single window. However, Gilon was too slow to stay the knifeman’s hand who proceeded to cut the grail damsel/prophetess’ throat.
….
- Wow React: Gilon felt no intention to negotiate with terrorists and advanced towards them, treading over a conveniently placed rope and charging towards the peasants with haste, stabbing one spearman and headbutting the other one with his ridiculously oversized, winged helmet. The archers began firing arrows at the knight who ducked below his shield as he slowly marched towards them. However, with all the commotion going on, the Herrimaults lost sight of Iselda who suddenly electrocuted the man holding her at knifepoint with her magic. Iselda then cast a chain lightning spell which began jumping from peasant to peasant while Gilon charged straight for Carlomax who he stabbed through the chest. And so together, Duke Gilon and Lady Iselda had vanquished all their captors. Gilon then carried the damsel downstairs in his arms (for her feet were very tired from being dragged around by filthy peasants) and the two flew back to his castle together on Fulminer.
….
- Angry React: Gilon considered his actions when suddenly, he heard a WAAAGH! cry in the distance. It appeared that the Greenskins of Massif Orcal had detected his flight after all. Gilon considered how close they might be when that thought process was interrupted by a horse neighing in pain outside. The Orcs were already here! Gilon, Iselda, Carlomax and his herrimaults decided to put their differences aside as a swarm of Orc Boyz charged up the spiralled stairway. Gilon and the two spearmen took up the first position while the damsel and the archers took up a support role behind them. The grail knight and his new allies formed from necessity fought valiantly, killing over 100 orc boyz and even a handful of big ‘uns within the pack.
However, eventually Gilon began to tire which coincided with the entrance of the orc warboss, a towering greenskin and veteran of Borgut Facebeater’s attack on Bastonne. The knight attempted to fight the warboss only to be crushed by the orc’s immense arms. The herrimaults and damsel continued to fight, even killing the warboss with an arrow to the eye but eventually, the orc boyz broke through their defence, bashed the herrimaults’ skulls with one-handed maces and stabbed the damsel with their slashas.
